"I remember a time when I too felt unbeautiful. I put on the TV and only saw pale skin, I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin…My mother reminded me often that she thought that I was beautiful but that was no conservation, she’s my mother, of course she’s supposed to think I am beautiful. And then…Alek Wek. A celebrated model, she was dark as night, she was on all of the runways and in every magazine and everyone was talking about how beautiful she was…Now, I had a spring in my step because I felt more seen, more appreciated by the far away gatekeepers of beauty. But around me the preference for my skin prevailed, to the courters that I thought mattered I was still unbeautiful. And my mother again would say to me ‘you can’t eat beauty, it doesn’t feed you’ and these words plagued and bothered me; I didn’t really understand them until finally I realized that beauty was not a thing that I could acquire or consume, it was something that I just had to be."

This was a fantastic speech, but I wish everyone would stop misquoting Lupita Nyong’o (I blame Buzzfeed.) If you actually listen to the speech, she’s saying, “My mother reminded me often that she thought that I was beautiful but that was no consolation.” Lupita has a slight accent, but it’s pretty clear what she’s saying. “Conservation” makes no sense, and makes it seem like Lupita has a poor understanding of English, which is far from the truth.
White people must be stopped.
this is that shit that pisses me off because black people get shit on for for having names like “Shaniqua” and “Lakieshia” and all that but white people get to name their kids shit like this nah fuck that son
I’m all for people’s names being respected no matter how different from the norm they might be. Rock on baby Lakynn! I mean, who is to judge what is a “good” name, a “white name” or a so-called “ghetto name” (a phrase fraught with so much wrong)? But this double standard needs to be called out. I guarantee you that a black child named Lakynn (how do you pronounce that?) would get the side eye but the same name bestowed upon a white child would seem unique and creative.
Funny. Every time black folks do something unique, creative, or magically make something out of nothing it’s called ghetto and summarily dismissed until mainstream culture (read: white) decides it’s cute (i.e. nail art, hair extensions, twerking, etc).

Uh, no. Confident that white people make fun of other white people for giving their children stupid names. They aren’t considered “unique” or “creative,” they’re considered White Trash. The Mormons (of which this woman is one) are notorious for making up incredibly dumb names. There’s an entire website (made by white people) dedicated to mocking Utah Mormons for their ridiculous baby names: http://wesclark.com/ubn/

Stuff like this makes me really dislike Tumblr. I’m not sure why so many people on Tumblr seem to think that they’re so amazing, special, or rock-solid in their rightness that they’re entitled to be so insulting towards someone that they happen to disagree with, often without citing any specific examples of posts that they disagree with.
Public service announcement: you are not special. You are not a wonderful snowflake. In fact, if you’re under the age of 22, you probably haven’t accomplished anything in your life other than being a drain on societies resources, and if you live in a first-world country, you’ve done nothing but take more than your fair share of the world’s resources. Stop thinking that you are somehow entitled to treat other people with rudeness and disrespect simply because you happen to disagree with something they said. You aren’t. Moreover, how you treat other people governs how they will treat you (the Golden Rule works, people.) Stop wasting your time on Tumblr being shitty to other people, and go out there and try to give something back, for once.

Reblogging as a reminder to everyone that the body is just a flesh machine. An amazing machine, but a machine. I think we simultaneously take it for granted and over-obsess about it. Too much of our identity is wrapped up in the appearance of the flesh. It’s just a vehicle to carry around our consciousness.
